7 Best Non-Dairy Yogurt Substitute Brands

Here are 7 of the most popular non dairy yogurt substitutes. But which ones are the best, and for what purpose?

We spent 4 ½ hours researching the top non dairy yogurt substitutes. We read. We listened. We debated with our trusted vegan friends.

We noted the common themes and put them together in a way that’s quick and easy to digest.

Of course, we had to include a macro table for you gym freaks, as this was missing from other articles.

Besides #1, we stuck to vanilla flavor because you can add anything to it or eat it plain.

But our ears (and mouths) were open when it came to other flavors as you’ll see in a moment.

Nowadays, the sheer amount of non-dairy yogurt substitutes can be confusing.

Some are good for cooking. Others are delicious on their own. A few should be avoided at all costs.

So how do you know which is which?

Read on or see our top picks below.

Best For Cooking

#1 Forager Project Cashewmilk Unsweetened Plain

Ingredients:

Cashewmilk (Filtered Water, Cashews*), Tapioca Starch*, Locust Bean Gum*, Coconut Cream*, Live Active Cultures (S. Thermophilus, L. Bulgaricus, L. Acidophilus, Bifidus, L. Lactis, L. Plantarum)

*Organic

Forager’s unsweetened plain yogurt has a mild flavor which makes it our #1 pick for cooking. It’s not as thin as soy yogurt, as the cashews help keep its creaminess. It’s basically the same as Forager’s sour cream. Our recommendation: Use in place of plant milk when cooking mac n cheese or soup.  Also comes in Vanilla (recommended if you’re eating it on its own) and various fruit flavors.

#2 Silk Soy Vanilla

Ingredients:

Soymilk (Filtered Water, Soybeans), Cane Sugar, Corn Starch, Pectin, Tricalcium Phosphate, Citric Acid, Natural Flavor, Dipotassium Phosphate, Sea Salt, Vanilla Bean, Live and Active Cultures, Mixed Tocopherols and Vitamin C Ester (to protect freshness), Vitamin D2.

This one pairs great with fruit and granola for breakfast. It’s very sweet with a creamy texture. Its protein content means it may keep you fuller for longer. One taster suggested the peach flavor makes an amazing fro-yo substitute when frozen. Remember to transfer it to the fridge when you know you’ll want it so the consistency is spot on. But if you’re looking to lower your sugar intake, the plain version is a better option – 5g sugars instead of a high 16g. The cherry and blueberry flavors have a weird taste, so we’d stay clear of those.

Best For Smoothies

#3 So Delicious Coconutmilk Vanilla

Ingredients:

Organic Coconutmilk (Filtered Water, Organic Coconut Cream), Organic Cane Sugar, Rice Starch, Contains 2% or Less of: Natural Flavor, Calcium Citrate, Pectin, Locust Bean Gum, Citric Acid, Live and Active Cultures, Vitamin D2, Vitamin B12.

This So Delicious yogurt has a solid vanilla flavor. It has just enough coconut without being overpowering. It’s smooth texture and consistency is better than silk soy. Mix chia seeds in for a great addition. On the flip side, it has zero protein. But it’s great in smoothies, and the strawberry and banana flavor (more banana taste than strawberry) is very good. Be aware there’s an extra 2g sugar compared to vanilla. That’s 17g of sugar!

Best For Protein

#4 Kite Hill Greek Style Vanilla Almond Unsweetened

Ingredients:

Almond Milk (Water, Almonds), Natural Flavors, Tapioca Starch, Pectin, Locust Bean Gum, Agar, Vanilla Beans, Live Active Cultures: S. Thermophilus, L. Bulgaricus, L. Acidophilus, Bifidobacteria.

Very high almond protein content. So what’s the catch? Well, it doesn’t taste amazing. Nor is it as creamy as the others. In fact, it’s slightly bitter. Yet, vanilla unsweetened fared much better than the plain one and has the same sugar content. You can make it somewhat tasty by adding other ingredients. Vanilla and tapioca help shadow the bitterness. If you’re less health-conscious, you may prefer sweetened flavors like strawberry. But be aware they have 12g of cane sugar.

Best for Texture

#5 Kite Hill Original Vanilla Almond Milk Yogurt

Ingredients:

Almond Milk (Water, Almonds), Cane Sugar, Starch, Citrus Fiber, Natural Flavors, Vanilla Extract, Locust Bean Gum, Citric Acid, Xanthan Gum, Vanilla Bean Seeds, Live Active Cultures: S.Thermophilus, L.Bulgaricus, L.Acidophilus, Bifidobacteria.

Kite Hill’s Original is nice and smooth. Super creamy. In fact, we’d say it has the best texture of the lot. It did have a slight citrusy taste to it, but our tasters didn’t mind. Add frozen blueberries to make it better. Some people found the flavor very distinct and off-putting. But if you think you can hack the citrusy/sour taste, this might be the one for you.

Best Standalone Yogurt

#6 Yoplait Oui Dairy-Free Vanilla

Ingredients:

Coconut Base (Water, Coconut Cream, Cane Sugar, Modified Tapioca Starch, Malic Acid, Natural Flavor, Vanilla Extract), Cultures.

If there was an award for cutest packaging, Yoplait’s Oui would win it. It has a perfect creamy thickness. There’s a prominent coconut taste to it, but it’s also very sweet. This yogurt stands well on its own so tasty toppings are optional. We suggest mango flavor if you can find it, but avoid strawberry. If you like coconut and have a sweet tooth, Oui may be your favorite.

Best For Health Freaks (By a Country Mile)

#7 Lavva Dairy Free Pili Nut Vanilla

Ingredients:

(*=organic) Coconut Water*, Coconut Cream*, Vanilla (Vanilla Extract, Vanilla Bean Seeds, Lemon Juice), Plantains, Pili Butter (Pili Nuts, Water), Coconut Powder*, Cassava Root Starch*, Lime Juice*, Himalayan Salt*

The most polarizing one of the bunch. It’s lusciously smooth but unfortunately tastes like farts. It’s VERY tangy. But you’ll find zero cane sugar here as Lavva uses natural sweeteners. Note the organic, high-quality ingredients. Plus 50 billion probiotics per cup from plantains. If you’re a real health-nut (no pun intended), you might actually love this yogurt. If you’re after a sweeter, less sour taste, stay far away.
